Inmate Mail Guidelines

Money orders, personal checks/cash for commissary deposit are not accepted through the mail. To send funds to an inmate make a web deposit.

You may send outgoing mail as often as you wish, provided your letters do not violate regulations of the United States Post Office or the safe and secure operations of the Jefferson County Detention Center. You are required to include your full name and return address on outgoing mail. Failure to do so will result in the mail being returned to you for correction. Your mailing address while in custody of the Jefferson County Detention Center is:

Jail Mail Policy

All incoming Detainees mail must be clearly marked with the Detainees’ legal name, Detainees Number, Housing Unit, full name of the Institution, street address, city, state, and zip code with a complete return address in the upper left-hand corner. However, every effort is made to deliver all mail received.

To expand the safety and security of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Jail for Detainees and Staff, the following changes are being implemented to the way in which facility will handle Detainees mail.

All non-privileged correspondence entering the Jail Facility must be post cards

  1. All postcards must be standard white postcards, no index cards or photographs.
  2. Postcards must be no larger than 5” X 7”.
  3. Postcards will have the stamps removed and discarded prior to delivery to the detainee.
  4. Postcards must be addressed with the return address clearly readable.
  5. There is no limit on how many postcards detainees can receive: however, detainees will be limited to ten (10) postcards in their cell at any time.
  6. Unacceptable postcards will be returned to sender. Unacceptable postcards may include but not be limited to the following:
    1. Defaced or altered postcards
    2. Postcards with plastic or wrapping of any kind
    3. Postcards with label or stickers
    4. Postcards with watermarks or stains
    5. Postcards with lipstick or perfume
    6. Postcards depicting nudity, weapons, alcohol, or gang reference

Pictures of friends and family are allowed, but cannot contain the following:

  • No nudity
  • No bare chested children
  • No activity showing drugs/alcohol/weapons/illegal activities
  • All pictures must be mailed from an authorized vendor
