Jeffereson County - Citizen's Academy

The Sheriff's Citizens Academy (SCA) was created to allow the citizens of Jefferson County to gain some insight and create a better understanding between the citizens and the Sheriff's Office. Each graduating class produces a growing number of citizens with first hand knowledge of the practices and procedures of the Sheriff's Office.

The Citizen Academy Classes

All Law Enforcement topics are addressed in the classes but they are not meant to train the citizens to become police officers.

The classes create an awareness of the variety of criminal activities handled by the Sheriff's Office. They also demonstrate to the citizen what it takes to keep them safe in their homes and businesses as well as on the highways.

Each class is a cross section of citizens from all over the county. Men and Women of all ages and all occupations, as well as retired persons.

The first class completed the course on November 17, 1998 and consisted of 22 citizens. The classes are kept small so that each individual can have the opportunity to interact with the officers and have more input into the program.

Each class lasts twelve weeks, one night a week for three hours. In order to receive a certificate, students must attend at least ten of the twelve classes. In addition to the thirty six hours of instruction, students are given the opportunity to ride along with a patrol officer for four hours. This enables them to observe first hand what an officer deals with on the street.

As a result of the Sheriff's Citizens Academy Class, a group of graduates formed a volunteer organization. The organization is called the Sheriff's Alumni Volunteer Echelon (S.A.V.E.). The group meets once a month at the Sheriff's Office. Meetings are held monthly on the 4th Tuesday at 7:00 pm. To be a member, you must successfully complete the Sheriff's Citizens Academy, pay dues of $12.00 per year, and maintain a clean record. The purpose of S.A.V.E. is to perform volunteer work for the Sheriff's Office and the citizen's of Jefferson County.

The S.A.V.E. organization can be contacted by email at: jcsd.save@gmail.com
